About Me.

I’ve been working with words since starting out as a trainee reporter in Birkenhead in the 1980s. It’s a while ago, but I still remember the thrill of seeing my first article in print.

Later there was a staff job at the Press Association, an Environment Correspondent role with a national newspaper, and time spent as a researcher for BBC1’s Countryfile programme.

I’ve also done a year or two spin-doctoring for trees (as Media Officer for the National Forest).

In recent years I’ve been self-employed, working with all sorts of clients to tell their stories. Jobs have included big, long-term projects like acting as managing editor for a membership magazine, as well as smaller, one-off gigs, like brochure copywriting, and creating website content.

Feature Writing

Whether the brief is to put together a celebrity profile or breathe life into an arcane science paper, I love feature writing. My work has been published by a wide range of magazine and newspaper titles – from The Times to Take a Break.

I also have experience of writing guest blogs and opinion columns. My weekly column for a leading gardening magazine ran for close to 20 years, around 500,000 words all told.

If you’d like to see examples of my published writing take a look at my Pressfolios page.

Editing

I love managing a big project, like a magazine or brochure, from concept to finished product. I’ve got lots of experience of creating custom-published magazine titles, both on a one-off and a continuing basis.

For example, I worked with the Environment Agency to launch a magazine called Your Environment for the general reader. More recently, I teamed up with Visit Wales to create and then edit Quality Wales, a magazine for people involved in travel and tourism.

Copywriting

Whether you call it copy, or content, you’ll know how much the right words matter. Good writing is at the heart of effective marketing.

I can help. I can bring a wealth of experience to all sorts of problems; from making an annual report readable, to creating advertorial supplements and sponsored microsites that get noticed.

I’ll work to ensure that online content is well-written and engaging. Search algorithms smile on website content that is regularly updated, useful, and good to read.

Books

My first book, Land Marks, was a series of ‘biographies’ of some of England’s best-loved wild places, including the Stiperstones, Richmond Park, and Wicken Fen. It won a History Today award.

In all I’ve had a hand in 10 non-fiction book projects, as author, consultant, editor, or ghostwriter. Just now I’m putting the finishing touches to a walking guide to Carmarthenshire, which will be my third title for the publisher Pocket Mountains.

I’m currently looking for the next book project and would be interested to hear about contract writing, or ghostwriting opportunities.

Over the years I’ve worked with all sorts of organisations. Here’s just a few:
